German mulled wine recipe “Gluhwein”

a group of glass bottles on a table

My father’s side of the family is German and this Gluhwein (pronounced “Glu-vine) is one of my favourite recipes to make at Christmas.  Gluh (meaning glowing… hot) and wein meaning wine.  It’s so warming and smells terrific.  Serve this before dinner, hopefully in front of a crackling fire so that everyone gets a nice smile on.  Enjoy this German mulled wine recipe and happy Christmas to you all!

Ingredients

  • 2 Bottles of Red Wine (merlot is good, nothing too expensive or tannic)
  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar. (Start with 1 cup… add to your taste)
  • 8 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 Oranges, sliced
  • 1 tsp of whole cloves
  • 1 Tbs whole allspice
  • pinch cardamon if you like (not traditional)
  • 1 to 2 cups orange juice (no pulp)
  • 1/2 c brandy

Instructions

  • Put in the cinnamon sticks and allspice pods (cardamon too)
  • Add the orange juice and brandy
  • Simmer
  • Add more sugar to your taste and serve forth
